The Hangzhou-Wenzhou high-speed railway line has commenced operations, connecting Hengdian’s new railway station to multiple cities in Zhejiang and significantly reducing travel time to Hangzhou and Shanghai.

The opening of Hengdian station marks Dongyang’s first high-speed rail connection, with the journey from Hangzhou to Hengdian now taking just over 30 minutes, reducing travel time by around an hour.

The bullet train also shortens the trip from Shanghai to Hengdian from three hours to one-and-a-half hour. In 2023, Hengdian World Studios had 19.8 million visitors, according to the company’s chairman Yang Zhiwei. He hopes the high-speed railway will increase that figure to 30 million by 2025.

“The opening of the high-speed rail has been a long-awaited expectation for the people of Hengdian,” Yang said. “It not only tightly connects Hengdian with major passenger hubs across the country, but also formally incorporates Hengdian into the rail transportation network, injecting strong momentum into the development of Hengdian Film Studios.

The high-speed link is a major milestone in Zhejiang province’s public transportation infrastructure, bringing bullet train access to regions that were previously unserved, including Pujiang, Dongyang and Xianju.

Before, most workers or visitors in Hengdian had to travel by bus or high-speed rail to Yiwu, which required a transfer in order to reach Hengdian. Now, the trip on Hengdian is much simpler with the bullet train, saving time and increasing convenience for travellers.

On opening day, performers clad in traditional Chinese costume greeted travellers on the high-speed rail platform as they arrived. Characters present included those from popular shows like “Joy of Life,” “Empresses in the Palace,” “Ink Rain Between Clouds,” “Lotus Flower Tower” and “Dream of Splendors.”

Even passengers whose final destinations were not Hengdian stepped off the train during its brief four-minute stop to take photos with actors. In addition to Hengdian station, costume-clad performers also appeared at Hangzhou West station and even on the train to interact with travellers.

Hengdian Station, Dongyang’s first high-speed rail link, comprises three platforms and eight lines. Divided into three storeys, the station covers nearly 30,000 square metres of land, including an underground passageway.

In recent times, Hengdian Film Studios has also worked to continuously upgrade its services, emphasizing diverse and engaging visitor experience and production innovations.

Tourist programs including “I am an Extra in Hengdian” and “Into the Movies” have launched to considerable fanfare and popularity, allowing visitors to fully immerse in scenes and stories when they visit Hengdian.
