Sustainability takes the spotlight at Hengdian's solar-powered studios
As the global film industry increasingly shifts towards greener and more sustainable filmmaking practices, Hengdian Group is also making moves, installing solar-powered studios and introducing set material recycling programs to reduce carbon emissions and lower waste across all its operations.
Hengdian Film & Television Industrial Park has installed 27 rooftop photovoltaic arrays across nearly 45,000 square meters in its film studios, generating roughly 5.5 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity each year. This output is equivalent to powering the park’s nighttime lighting for three years or supplying about 30,000 households for one year.
Each year, the rooftop solar panels reduce CO₂ emissions by more than 4,300 tonnes, with capacity set to continually expand as new installations come online.
In addition, Hengdian is also advancing circular production on its sets. It has introduced a “Zero-Waste Base” initiative to reduce and repurposes on-set waste and safely disposes of residual materials. Each year, hundreds of thousands of props are put through this program to be recycled and refurbished.
Hengdian has made its set material production logs publicly available to encourage transparent, low-carbon workflows. Internationally-renowned movie stars including Jackie Chan have lent their voices to on-set energy-saving campaigns, amplifying industry awareness.
Sixty production teams have also jointly planted a “carbon-sink” tree forest at Hengdian. It allows visitors and crews to track tree growth in real time, linking on-set emission reductions to tangible reforestation efforts and public participation.
Worldwide, ESG and sustainable production practices are becoming a crucial priority. Numerous international film and production companies are setting up and expanding their sustainability frameworks, and multiple major film festivals are ramping up carbon-reduction commitments.
Hengdian is aligning closely with these international practices, prioritizing greener, lower-carbon practices. Hengdian is determined to set a positive example on the global film stage, and is dedicated to continually reducing its environmental footprint while powering creativity.
