Apeloa puts sustainability centre stage at US GC&E conference
Apeloa Pharmaceutical took part last month in the 29th annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference (GC&E) in Pittsburgh, presenting on the event’s theme “Good Health and Well-Being through Sustainable Chemistry,” a goal that Apeloa is firmly and deeply committed to across all its work.
At the conference, Apeloa’s Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) Dr. Johannes Platzek, presented a talk to researchers and industry professionals about flow chemistry, one of Apeloa’s key technology platforms in advancing sustainable chemical processes and reducing environmental impact. Dr. Platzek, a veteran organic chemist with over three decades of experience at Bayer, introduced the benefits of Apeloa’s flow chemistry platform in minimizing both waste and energy consumption.
By using continuous flow systems instead of traditional batch processing, flow chemistry reduces PMI, a measure of the amount of chemical inputs needed to produce a product, and lowers CO₂ emissions during production. As a result, Apeloa’s flow chemistry not only boosts drug manufacturing efficiency but also supports the sustainable pharmaceutical development, Dr. Platzak explained.
The GC&E conference, hosted by the American Chemistry Society (ACS) positions itself as the premier global event for green chemistry and engineering. Every year, it brings together prominent scientists and industry leaders to explore important advancements in sustainability through green chemistry.
As a longstanding and trusted player in the CDMO space, Apeloa is highly dedicated to leading the march towards more sustainable chemistry. Dr Platzak’s expertise and experience in green chemistry and process improvement will be vital in moving this needle.
Speaking to reputable science publication Chemistry & Engineering News (C&EN), Apeloa’s Lilith Elmore explained, “it is a privilege to be at the forefront of sustainability discussions and see where we stand in tandem with other folks in the industry.” Elmore expressed Apeloa’s eagerness not only in “displaying our capabilities in the sustainability world,” but also in sharing and interacting with all the other researchers, educators and professionals at the GC&E conference.
As the green chemistry field continues to grow, Apeloa is fiercely dedicated to advancing sustainable practices in pharmaceutical development. Going forward, Apeloa’s strong leadership and technological prowess are well-positioned to continue driving progress in sustainability and to develop solutions for both current and future challenges.
