Sci-fi blockbuster The Wandering Earth 2 co-produced by Hengdian Films premieres in Brazil
The sci-fi blockbuster The Wandering Earth 2 has premiered a Portuguese-dubbed version in Brazilian theatres on June 5. The film is co-produced by Zhejiang Hengdian Films Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Hengdian Entertainment, and is among the highest-grossing films in Chinese cinematic history.
The Brazil release of The Wandering Earth 2 comes two years after its initial release in 2023 and was handled by Brazilian entertainment agency Sato Company. The Brazilian version retains the full 173-minute movie runtime and marks the first large-scale commercial screening of a Chinese sci-fi film in the Brazilian market.
The Wandering Earth 2 is directed by Frant Gwo and stars Jacky Wu, Li Xuejian, and Sha Yi, featuring a special appearance by Andy Lau. Brazilian actress Daniela Tassy also plays an astronaut in the film. The Wandering Earth 2 builds on the vast universe introduced in the original The Wandering Earth film and tells the sweeping tale of how humanity launches the “Wandering Earth Project” in response to a solar crisis.
The first The Wandering Earth movie, which was critically acclaimed worldwide since its 2019 debut, is now also streaming on Netflix. The film is loosely based on the 2000 short story written by Liu Cixin, the Hugo Award-winning author of sci-fi saga The Three-Body Problem.
Prior to its release in Brazil, The Wandering Earth 2 had already been screened in China, North America, Australia, the United Kingdom, and South Africa, with a global box office total surpassing RMB 4.05 billion (USD600 million) since its launch in 2023. The first Wandering Earth movie grossed RMB 4.69 billion (USD650 million) in ticket sales worldwide since 2019.
Various cinemas across Brazil have been promoting the film, with some theaters scheduling screenings in IMAX and other premium formats. With its epic storytelling and stunning visuals, The Wandering Earth 2 promises to captivate Brazilian audiences, just as it has viewers worldwide.
Meanwhile, filming has begun for The Wandering Earth 3, drawing excitement and anticipation across China social media for the last film of the trilogy. According to the official website of the China Film Administration, The Wandering Earth 3 is set to be released in two parts.
